West St. Paul supporting BellMTS bid to bring high-speed Internet to RM
The RM of West St. Paul is supporting BellMTS’s application to the Government of Canada’s Universal Broadband Fund (UBF), which has a goal of providing broadband Internet services in eligible underserved areas across the country.
As a rural municipality, many of West St. Paul’s residents don’t have access to high-speed broadband Internet.
"Access to high-speed Internet is something people expect to have and we’re proud to support BellMTS in its application to bring broadband to West St. Paul,” Mayor Cheryl Christian said.
"We live in a digital world and bringing broadband Internet to the community is important to us and it will have meaningful and lasting benefits for our residents for years to come.”
In the RM’s letter of support, CAO Brent Olynyk said:
"Access to high-speed Internet is a priority for our community. As an underserved rural community, the lack of high-speed Internet access has prevented residents from taking advantage of the many benefits and opportunities afforded by the digital era. By making faster Internet speeds available in our community, the proposed project will allow households, businesses and community institutions to keep pace with changing technology and fully participate in the digital economy.”
West St. Paul will be part of BellMTS’s application to expand its all-fibre broadband network. If the application is successful, West St. Paul will benefit from improved broadband access that supports the connectivity needs of residents, institutions and businesses in the area, including broadband speeds – using the world’s fastest Internet technology – of up to 1.5 Gigabits per second for downloads and up to 940 Megabits per second for uploads.
The RM of West St. Paul wants to make our community the most desirable municipality in Manitoba to live, work and play by providing transparent leadership and professional services, while championing the lifestyle of Wonderful West St. Paul.
BellMTS’s application to the UBF program, if approved, will provide more households, businesses and other organizations in our region with the broadband access they need to take advantage of digital opportunities, especially with respect to businesses, education, health and public safety.
