Province announces new school for West St. Paul; construction begins on two private schools

The Manitoba government is investing in schools and education, including here in West St. Paul where a new K-8 school will be built in the coming years.

Mayor Cheryl Christian said the RM is a choice destination for young families and a new school is necessary.

"Our council and our staff have worked hard to provide the best services to our residents and we’re now becoming a place that is sought out by people who want to enjoy the West St. Paul lifestyle,” Christian said.

"We’re building communities and we’re thrilled with the homes, the green spaces, the parks and the trails that are coming to life and making our municipality even stronger. New schools, public and private, provide our new and existing residents with options and help us create a welcoming family friendly community.”

The school, which will be part of the Seven Oaks School Division and be built on the south side of the Perimeter Highway, is part of a Manitoba government investment of $210 million into K-12 capital projects, of which $24 million will be used for land acquisition.

CAO Brent Olynyk said two private schools – Dasmesh School on Holmes Road and Kings School on Kapelus Drive – will be built first. Dasmesh is under construction now and has an anticipated fall opening and Kings is scheduled to start construction soon.

"Schools are a barometer of the health of a community and we have two on the way now and a third, a public school deemed necessary by the Province, that will follow in a few short years,” Olynyk said.

"Construction on infrastructure for a new community inside the Perimeter is already underway and the school will be built about three years afterwards. It’s exciting and shows the Province is committed to West St. Paul and this is a place where people want to raise their families and be part of a special community.”
