Dutch Elm Disease Surveys Underway in the RM of West St. Paul
The RM of West St. Paul would like to advise residents that annual Dutch elm disease (DED) surveys and invasive forest pest monitoring are underway throughout participating Manitoba communities.
Between June 22 and early September 2026, provincial inspectors from Manitoba's Forestry and Peatlands Branch will be conducting surveys on both public and private properties to identify elm trees infected with Dutch elm disease, as well as elm firewood with bark attached, which can contribute to the spread of the disease.
During this time, inspectors may be seen driving or walking through neighbourhoods, including on private property. Inspections may occur during daytime hours, evenings, and weekends. Inspectors will wear high-visibility safety vests and carry government-issued identification.
Residents should be aware that inspectors may not contact every homeowner before entering a property to conduct visual inspections. However, inspectors will knock on doors or ring doorbells before taking branch samples, marking infected trees, or identifying elm firewood for removal under Manitoba's Dutch elm disease management program and The Forest Health Protection Act.
In addition to DED surveys, monitoring for emerald ash borer (EAB) will also take place throughout southern Manitoba. Monitoring traps may be installed in select locations by an external contractor.
Important Reminder: Elm trees cannot be pruned between April 1 and July 31, as the beetles that spread Dutch elm disease are attracted to fresh pruning cuts.
Thank you for your cooperation.
