Spring Runoff and Drainage

As temperatures rise, melting snow and seasonal rain can lead to more water on streets, in ditches, and around properties. During this time, it is normal to see standing water on roads and in ditches. Streets and ditches are designed to hold water for a short time and allow it to drain at a controlled rate. In most cases, this is expected and not a cause for concern. If water is getting close to your home, has reached your foundation, or is entering your basement, please contact the Operations Department immediately at 204-334-0092 to report the issue.

It is important to ensure your sump pump is working and downspouts are extended so water is directed away from your home’s foundation. Sump pump discharge should not be directed onto neighbouring properties, sidewalks, or roads, as this can create additional drainage concerns.

RM of West St. Paul operations staff are actively working to keep runoff moving smoothly. Crews are steaming culverts and maintaining ditches to prevent blockages and flooding. These efforts, combined with residents’ proactive steps, help protect homes and streets during spring runoff.
