West St Paul Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel

West St Paul Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel in the Capital Region.

Roads may be slippery as a result of snow, ice, and wet foliage. If you need to travel, be aware of your surroundings: watch for downed trees or damaged power lines that have fallen, and crews working. Highways were reportedly snow-packed and slippery. The latest highways information is available at Manitoba 511.

Roads in West St Paul were in decent shape on Friday morning as a storm system from the south pounded southern and central Manitoba.By 2 p.m. Hydro said they were dealing with some 50,000 outages across the province.

Manitoba Hydro said crews continue to work to restore power, but the company anticipated more outages throughout Friday. People who see a downed line or sparking transformer should stay away, noting that the risk of being electrocuted is not worth a video or photo for social media.

The Public Works Department has done a basic clearing of all local roads, but no windrows are being done as we are focused on roads. They are also dealing with trees that have come down and have trimmed or removed them for safety. The areas with pavement works have been secured with signage and snow clearing has been done to maintain traffic flow. The sewer project on Addis is shut down for the weekend and one traffic lane is open.

The Fire Chief has asked that you:

  • Be very diligent in the use of candles
  • Ensure you have a functioning, battery operated, smoke detector and CO detector within your home
  • If using gas powered generator(s) please ensure they well ventilated and run outdoors
  • Be very diligent in the use of any fuel fired heating or cooking devices as they will give off Carbon Monoxide.
  • With this being a holiday long weekend ensure your household has enough essential items to last until next Tuesday

Mayor Cheryl Christian would like to thank our Municipal staff for going above and beyond to clear streets, respond to accidents and oversee our utilities during this challenging storm. Thank you to our residents for your patience and co-operation in keeping the streets clear so our staff can safely and efficiently clear our roads.
