Get your permits now so you can be ready to build come springtime

There might be snow on the ground and the temperature is still on the wrong side of zero, but believe it or not, now is the right time to put your summer building plans in motion.

Jennifer Ferguson, Executive Director for the Red River Planning District, says now is the perfect time to apply for permits for all kinds of summer home improvements you may be undertaking when the weather is warmer.

"Now is the perfect time to apply for a permit. Our permit turnaround times are basically cut in half during the winter months,” Ferguson said.

"Once a permit is issued it’s valid for a year. That means you can apply in February for the project you’re building in the summer, and you’re ready to go when it finally warms up.”

Whether you’re putting in a swimming pool or adding a deck to your back yard, you’ll need a permit.

Permits, Ferguson says, along with RRPD inspections, ensure your project meets all necessary codes and regulations, in order to promote the health, safety and well-being of current and future occupants.

Permits are required for all kinds of things, but basically, if you want to construct, add to, alter, demolish, replace or relocate any building or part of a building or structure, you will usually need a permit.

The homeowner can take out the permit, or, can provide a letter of authorization to the RRPD that allows a third party, such as a contractor, to act on your behalf.

Processing times vary depending on the project and the time of year. Busy season for building is, of course, during the warmer months – April to September - so an application put in now will ensure you’re ready to start hammering come summer.
