April 24-30 is Rail Safety Week – education, enforcement to be beefed up

RM of West St. Paul council has passed a resolution declaring April 24 – April 30 Rail Safety Week.

During that time, representatives from Canadian Pacific and the Canadian Pacific Police Service (CPPS) will educate the public about rail safety and, along with local police agencies, will conduct rail safety blitzes in West St. Paul and other communities in Canada.

"When people use railway property or tracks as walking paths, they are risking their lives,” said Laird Pitz, CP’s Vice President and Chief Risk Officer.

"Rail safety requires vigilance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We are asking everyone to consider their own safety around railroad property. The impact of an incident can have tragic consequences for all concerned, including family, friends and community.”

CP has been recognized as the safest railway in North America, with the fewest reportable train accidents per million train miles among all Class 1 railroads, for 11 years straight.

And while CP says railway crossing incidents declined in Canada last year, there was a sharp increase in trespassing incidents. Tragically, 46 pedestrians and 19 drivers lost their lives in these preventable incidents, compared to 31 pedestrians and 14 drivers in 2015.

CP says it will work tirelessly, with its community partners, to promote safety in and around railway properties.

Safety and security is CP’s top priority in the communities it operates in.

Members of the public are reminded to stay off railway tracks and that CPPS and RCMP will be patrolling tracks, watching for trespassers during Rail Safety Week and year-round.
